What’s up guys, welcome back to Morimoto Lighting. I’m Bear Dellinger, and today we’re diving into one of our favorite upgrades for GM’s full-size SUV: the Morimoto XB LED Headlights Tahoe owners have been waiting for. If you have a 2015-2020 Chevrolet Tahoe rolling around on tired halogen projectors, this is the modern, plug-and-play upgrade that transforms both the look and the safety of your truck. We tested them on the lux meter, we installed them ourselves, and in this guide we’ll walk you through exactly what they offer and how to get them fitted at home.
Why the Morimoto XB Headlights Stand Out on the Tahoe
Before we get into the install, let’s talk about why these headlights are some of the best options for this year, make, and model. One of the coolest features right out of the gate is Morimoto’s startup sequence. When you turn the lights on, you get that nice animation that instantly sets the XB housings apart from anything the factory offered. It’s a small touch, but it gives the whole front end a premium, purposeful feel.

These headlights also feature a sequential amber turn signal. During the install you can decide whether you want to keep it standard or run it sequential, so it comes down to your personal preference. On the projector side, each headlight uses three LED projectors for the low beam and two for the high beam, so you get serious output across the board. There’s also a fully functional daytime running light that automatically dims down once you turn your headlights on, which keeps everything looking clean and factory-correct.
The whole system is full plug-and-play, which makes the install a breeze compared to a lot of aftermarket housings. They come equipped with LED side markers too, so the housing becomes a complete LED system from front to back. And finally, that black piano finish gives your headlights a clean, modern look that really updates the face of the Tahoe. If you want to grab a set, we have the 15-20 Tahoe XB LED headlights (LF548) ready to ship.
Lux Meter Testing: How Much Brighter Are They?
The way we test how bright or dim a headlight really is comes down to a digital lux meter. This measures actual usable brightness at a specific point, which is a far more honest comparison than measuring lumens. We set up 25 feet from the wall and measured the stock halogen lights first to establish our benchmark.

The OEM halogen low beam on the Tahoe only comes in at 250 maximum lux. The XB low beam, by comparison, measured 2040 maximum lux, which makes it 716% brighter than your stock low beams. On the high beam side, the factory halogens measured 930 maximum lux, a tad better but nowhere near the XB. The XB high beam came in at 2170 maximum lux, which is 133% brighter than the stock halogen high beams. Beyond the raw numbers, the XB headlights produce a cleaner cutoff, a wider beam pattern, and that crisp white modern look on the road. Tools You’ll Need for the Install
Now that you know all about the features, let’s get straight into the install. First up, gather your tools. You’ll want a pry tool of your choice (a flathead or an actual wedge tool both work), a T20 Torx bit, a 10mm socket, a 7mm socket, and a ratchet of your choice. That’s the whole toolkit for this job.

Step-by-Step Installation
Remove the Grille Cover and Grille
First things first, pop the hood. Next, remove the 12 plastic push clips on top of your grille cover using a pry tool. You can use a flathead or an actual wedge tool for this. With all those push tabs out, lift up on the grille cover and set it aside. Then remove the bolts on top of your grille using the 10mm socket and ratchet.
With those out, move to the harness. If you have parking sensors or fog lights on your Tahoe, you’ll have this connector to disconnect. If not, you can skip that step. If your Tahoe runs the square fog housings, you can also modernize those with our XB LED fog lights for square-fog Tahoes while you’re already up front.
Remove the Fender Bolts and Bumper
Now head down by the fender. Turn your front wheel forward so you have a little more clearance on the inner fender. There will be six 7mm bolts to remove right there, and that last one sits straight up and is a little hard to see, but I promise it’s there. Do the exact same thing on the passenger side, then head underneath the vehicle.

Underneath the vehicle, remove the two 10mm screws and the one plastic push tab, then the other 10mm screw. There are two on the center section, one here and one there, and we’re just working from left to right. On the passenger side you’ll remove those two 10mm screws, the plastic push tab, and the one on the very corner.
Next, remove the bumper and grille. Pry on the very side of your bumper first, then work your way on top of the grille with a wedge tool to release the three areas on top. There are also two clips on the very bottom of the grille. It’s a little bit of a reach down there, but use your wedge tool and pull up on that plastic piece to release it. With everything out, uninstall the bumper and grille. You may want to grab a friend for this part to get it up and out of the way safely.
Remove the OEM Headlights
With the grille and bumper out, uninstall your OEM headlights. There are four 10mm screws to remove, two on top and two on bottom. To fully release the headlight, use a pry tool and pry up on this area of the housing, then pull back on the little metal bracket to release it. With the headlight out, disconnect the harness on the back, set it aside, and do the exact same thing on the driver’s side.
Install the DRL Harness and Fuse Tap
Now install your DRL harness. Remove the fuse lid on your fuse box, then locate slot 75 in your fuse panel. Use the included fuse tap and insert it into that slot. Put the fuse box lid back on, then route the shorter lead to the driver’s side and the longer lead over to the passenger headlight.

Transfer the OEM Brackets
Before installing the Morimoto XB headlights, transfer your OEM brackets from the old housings onto the new ones. Use a T20 to remove the three screws on the bottom of your OEM headlight. With that bracket removed, flip the headlight around and remove the chrome piece on top by taking out the five T20 screws.

Take that black bracket piece from your OEM headlight, line it up with your Morimoto headlight, and screw it back into place with the T20. Keep in mind when tightening these down not to go too tight, since you’re working with plastic. Flip the headlight around and install the chrome piece as well, laying it on the base of the headlight and lining it up with the three holes where you took the T20s out. Then take the rubber trim piece that comes with your XB headlights and use the remaining T20 screws to bolt it down. Repeat the whole process on the passenger headlight.
Install the XB Headlights and Test
With those brackets installed, start installing your headlight. The two connectors you’ll be plugging in are your DRL and your main harness. With everything connected, slide your headlight in. I like to take one of those bolts and screw it in on the very top of the headlight to make sure it doesn’t fall out, then do the same on the driver’s side.
Run through all of the headlight functions to make sure everything is working properly, then button everything back up. Keep in mind with that DRL harness that it should not be intrusive with any moving parts so it doesn’t get caught. Last but not least, adjust your headlights so you’re not blinding oncoming traffic and everything stays safe on the road.

Completing the Look Front and Rear
Once the headlights are dialed in, a lot of owners want to match the rear of the truck. We offer matching XB LED tail lights for the Tahoe that carry the same modern styling from front to back, and if you’d rather buy everything in one shot, the Tahoe headlight and tail light combo kit bundles them together. If you like doing your research across retailers, you can also find the Headlight Revolution’s Tahoe XB LED listing and the Escalade-inspired Tahoe tail lights at The Retrofit Source.
